Cancer in the air in the Houston Ship channel

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

Having lived in Houston for 4 years I know just how big and dirty that city can be. But I lived on the north side and rarely went anywhere near the shipping area. But it often made the news about fires or injuries or whatever else was going on. U.T just released a report stating that children that live within 2 miles have a 56% higher risk of getting leukemia from all the airborne pollutants. All the refineries there burn off stuff like benzene and 1-3 butadiene, which are known carcenagans.  What continues to amaze me is that we, as a country, allow this to continue. We have known for ages that this stuff is toxic and it is going to work its way into our water and food supply and yet nothing is done. Our government that is supposed to be here to protect and serve allows these people to do whatever they want because they have money and throw it around.
